The Australian government has declared its mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030 has been accomplished, despite ongoing concerns from the opposition about the achievability of this target.
Government’s Achievement
According to a report by Jacob Greber, the Minister for Climate Change and Energy, has stated that “pollution is coming down” due to the implementation of robust reforms and pragmatic policies. The minister also claimed that the Coalition cannot even name a 2030 target, let alone achieve it.
Target Achievement
The target in question means that Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions need to fall from around 440 million tonnes to 352 million tonnes by 2030. Quarterly data suggests that emissions have largely stalled since the pandemic, at about 440 million tonnes.
Coalition’s Concerns
The Coalition continues to question the achievability of this target, which was taken to the 2022 election and enshrined in law later that month.
