Dawson Public Power District’s Utility Line Camp inspires local youth with hands-on learning experience, addressing the growing demand for skilled utility line technicians.
Empowering the Next Generation of Lineworkers
Dawson Public Power District’s annual Utility Line Camp is a shining example of the organization’s commitment to fostering the next generation of skilled professionals in the utility line trade. The half-day camp, which welcomed 15 regional high school students, provided a unique and immersive experience that introduced participants to the critical skills required for this challenging yet rewarding career path.
A lineworker training program typically includes hands-on training in climbing, rigging, and electrical systems.
Trainees learn to operate equipment such as bucket trucks, aerial lifts, and digger derricks.
They also study safety protocols, including personal protective equipment (PPE) usage and emergency response procedures.
On average, a lineworker training program lasts 12-18 months and includes both classroom instruction and field training.
Hands-On Learning Experience
The camp offered a variety of activities designed to give students a realistic glimpse into the world of utility lineworkers. Participants learned proper pole climbing techniques, rode in bucket trucks, and observed a pole change-out. These hands-on examples provided invaluable insight into the demanding nature of this profession and sparked interest among local youth.
‘Giving these students a real-world experience is invaluable,’ said Jeremy Kaiser, ‘We believe in fostering the next generation of skilled professionals, and this camp is a fantastic way to spark their interest in an industry critical to our communities.’
Addressing the Growing Demand

The DPPD Utility Line Camp aims to address the growing demand for skilled utility line technicians by showcasing the profession to local youth and highlighting the opportunities available within the energy industry. By doing so, Dawson Public Power District is helping to ensure a steady supply of talented professionals who can support the continued delivery of essential power to its 24,000 meters in south central Nebraska.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the lineworker occupation is expected to decline by 8% from 2020 to 2030.
However, the industry faces a significant shortage due to retirement and job requirements.
Lineworkers must undergo extensive training, including apprenticeships and certification programs.
The median annual salary for lineworkers is around $95,000.
With an aging workforce and increasing demand for electricity, utilities companies are struggling to recruit and retain skilled lineworkers.
The camp’s participants came from various high schools across regional counties, including Amherst, Bertrand, Gothenburg, Hershey, Lexington, North Platte, Overton, Maxwell, and several others. These students now possess a deeper understanding of the utility line trade and are one step closer to pursuing a rewarding career in this critical industry.
