Meet Nomie Fabian, the inspiring young Paralympian who’s breaking barriers in sailing. At just 11 years old, she’s already a force to be reckoned with on the water.
Breaking Down Barriers: Nomine Fabian‘s Journey to Sailing
Nomine Fabian, an 11-year-old wheelchair user from Germany, has discovered a passion for sailing. Despite being confined to a wheelchair, she has found ways to adapt and excel in this sport, inspiring others with her determination.
From the Water’s Edge to the Racing Course
Nomine took up sailing at the age of five under the guidance of her coach, Dirk Hückstädt, who runs a surfing and sailing school. Initially, they considered modifying their equipment to accommodate her needs. However, Nomine quickly demonstrated that she could navigate the vessel with ease, showcasing her skills in operating the sheet and rudder.
Nomine‘s experience is not unique; her coach has also helped wheelchair users learn kite surfing and drive beach buggies. This flexibility and willingness to adapt have allowed Nomine to pursue her passion for sailing without limitations.
Embracing Independence

On the North Sea, Nomine effortlessly steers the catamaran through small waves, executing precise maneuvers with confidence. Her fearlessness on the water stems from a child’s perspective: she perceives the ocean as a playground where porpoises swim, eating smaller fish and plankton. This carefree attitude has enabled her to excel in sailing.
Nomine earned her sailing license at eight years old after demonstrating her readiness for the theoretical component of the exam by reading and writing. Her mother, Andrea Fabian, attributes Nomine‘s success to her determination: ‘It makes me incredibly proud and very happy to see what’s possible despite having a spinal cord injury.‘
A Role Model in the Making
Nomine aspires to compete in the Paralympics, driven by her belief that sports can be inclusive for everyone. She sees the Paralympics as an opportunity to demonstrate that sports are accessible even with disabilities. For Nomine, sailing is not just a hobby but a means of empowering others to feel strong and capable.
