In a new six-part series, Prince William joins forces with Sir David Attenborough to highlight the courageous work of rangers protecting endangered animals and ecosystems worldwide.
A New Wildlife Show: The Guardians
The Prince and Sir David share a passion for conserving the natural world, and have supported each other’s projects in the field.
The Importance of Rangers
Protecting the natural world shouldn’t be that dangerous. Being a soldier, a police officer, or an emergency services personnel are all jobs that put people’s lives on the line. Yet, rangers, who protect endangered animals, face a similar level of risk. Around 1,400 rangers have died in the past decade, making it one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet.
The Challenge of Recruiting New Generations
The Prince has expressed concern about the lack of recognition and compensation for rangers’ work. They do so much more than just protecting wildlife – they also conduct community initiatives, education, and scientific research. However, many young people are deterred from becoming rangers due to a lack of awareness or appreciation for their role.
A New Series: Guardians

The Prince’s new six-part series, called ‘Guardians‘ , aims to highlight the work of rangers and raise awareness about the challenges they face. The series will focus on how community conflicts, civil wars, illegal fishing, and poaching are driving these risks further around the world. Each episode will feature an on-screen introduction by Prince William and also appear in a trailer for the project.
The Prince’s Personal Connection
The Prince has credited ‘Sir David Attenborough‘ as a ‘big inspiration’ to him growing up, and the motivation behind his new series. He hopes that ‘Guardians’ will do the same kind of thing, presenting wonderful parts of the world to many people who may never get the chance to visit.
Sir David Attenborough is a British naturalist and broadcaster who has spent over six decades exploring the natural world.
Born on May 8, 1926, he studied geology and zoology at Cambridge University.
Attenborough's career spans television, radio, and film, with notable shows including 'Zoo Quest' and 'Life on Earth'.
He has received numerous awards for his contributions to science communication, including multiple BAFTAs and a knighthood in 1985.
A Call to Action
Prince William stressed that rangers are essential planetary health workers who need our recognition and support. The Prince also announced a new life insurance scheme to cover 10,000 rangers who safeguard Africa’s wildlife. He called on the public to care about the natural environment and to recognize the importance of these individuals in protecting it.
Rangers have a rich history dating back to the 16th century in Scotland.
Originally, they were formed as mounted infantry units to combat Scottish Highland clans.
Over time, their role expanded to include law enforcement and conservation efforts.
Today, rangers can be found worldwide, working in national parks, wildlife reserves, and other protected areas.
Their primary responsibilities include protecting ecosystems, enforcing regulations, and educating the public about environmental issues.
The first episode of the series is now available on BBC Earth’s YouTube and social channels, with a new episode released every Friday.
