In a pivotal test of Keir Starmer’s leadership, Labour candidate Karen Shore fights to hold onto Runcorn in the face of Reform UK’s reform surge.
Despite polls suggesting that Nigel Farage‘s Reform UK is on track to overturn Labour‘s 14,700 majority in the first electoral test of Keir Starmer‘s government, Labour candidate Karen Shore insists the contest is ‘definitely still in play.‘ The byelection in Runcorn and Helsby has been dubbed one of the most significant tests of the new prime minister’s leadership.
Nigel Farage is a British politician and former leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP).
Born on April 3, 1964, in Downe, Kent, he rose to prominence advocating for Brexit.
Farage served as an MEP from 1999 to 2020 and led UKIP from 2006 to 2016.
He is known for his eurosceptic views and has been a vocal critic of the European Union.
Farage's leadership and oratory skills played a significant role in the 2016 EU referendum, which resulted in the UK's decision to leave the EU.
The National Picture
Two polls have indicated that Reform UK is gaining ground on Labour, with Farage‘s party becoming odds-on favourite to win. This would be a historic swing in voter opinion and a significant blow to Starmer, who has faced criticism for his handling of key issues such as immigration and asylum seekers.
However, Shore remains optimistic about the campaign, stating that the reception had been ‘really positive‘ and victory was still within reach. She acknowledged that the initial launch of her Facebook petition to close the ‘asylum hotel‘ had attracted criticism, but denied it was a cynical tactic aimed at siphoning off Reform UK votes.
A Campaign Divided

Shore, who has previously welcomed asylum seekers to the area during her time as deputy council leader, emphasized her commitment to inclusivity and welcoming people. She acknowledged that the tone of the petition could have been handled differently but maintained that closing the hotel was a necessary step to address the issue.
Reform UK’s candidate, Sarah Pochin, has focused on immigration, targeting asylum hotels, houses of multiple occupation, and Turkish barbers. Shore accused her rival’s campaign of demonizing people to create fear and scapegoat them, stating that some aspects of Pochin‘s rhetoric could be racist.
A Tough Test
Senior Labour figures have sought to manage expectations ahead of polling day on Thursday, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak admitting it would be a ‘tough‘ contest. Ellie Reeves, the party chair, accused the Conservatives of ‘gifting‘ the seat to Farage by not campaigning.
As the country waits for the results, Shore remains resolute in her determination to win the byelection and prove that Labour is still a force to be reckoned with under Starmer‘s leadership.
Keir Starmer is a British politician serving as the Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party since 2020.
He was previously the Shadow Brexit Secretary from 2016 to 2019.
Born on September 2, 1962, in South London, he studied law at the University of Leeds and later earned his Ph.D. 'in Law' from King's College London.
Starmer served as a Labour Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras since 2015.
