The Holy See Press Office announced on Friday that Pope Francis would be admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic hospital in Rome following his morning audiences.
The 88-year-old Pontiff will undergo several diagnostic tests and continue treatment for his ongoing bout of bronchitis.
Bronchitis is a common respiratory condition characterized by inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to the lungs.
It can be acute or chronic, with symptoms including coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

This is not the first time ‘he was hospitalized’ Pope Francis has been treated for bronchitis. In March 2023, he was hospitalized at the same Gemelli Hospital for three nights due to a similar illness. Additionally, in December 2023, he was forced to cancel his trip to the United Arab Emirates for the COP28 climate summit due to another bout of illness.
The Pope has been suffering from bronchitis symptoms for several days and has delegated officials to read his prepared speeches at recent events. On Wednesday, during a general audience, he asked a priest to continue reading part of his speech because of his difficulties with the illness. He also held meetings at his Vatican residence last week in an attempt to rest and recover.
Pope Francis has spent nearly 12 years as leader of the Roman Catholic Church and has suffered from various health issues throughout his life, including having part of one of his lungs removed at age 21.
