The Ingilby family’s seven-century legacy comes to an end as they put their beloved Ripley Castle up for sale, marking a new chapter in the historic estate’s history.
The owners of a 700-year-old castle and estate, the Ingilby family, have announced that they are putting their beloved home up for sale.
Ripley Castle, located near ‘Harrogate’ in North Yorkshire, has been in the family’s possession since the 14th Century.
The Ingilby family is a prominent English family with a long history dating back to the Middle Ages.
They were first recorded in the 13th century, with their original seat at Ripley Castle in North Yorkshire.
“Their original seat was an important milestone in our family's history.”
The family was known for its significant contributions to the local community, including philanthropy and public service.
In the 18th century, the Ingilbys became prominent landowners in the area, with extensive estates and agricultural interests.
They were also notable for their involvement in politics and diplomacy.
A Lifetime of Dedication
The Sir Thomas and Lady Ingilby have spent decades working tirelessly to maintain the large estate, which includes 445 acres of land, a cricket pitch, hotel, tea room, gift shop, and wedding venue.
The couple has been instrumental in preserving the castle’s history and heritage, and they are proud to say that they have left it in the best possible state for future generations.
‘We’ve ticked every box on our list,’ said Sir Thomas. ‘We’ve replaced the majority of the roof, and we’re confident that the new owner will be able to enjoy the castle without any major concerns.’
A Bittersweet Decision

The decision to sell the castle was not made lightly by the couple.
They are sad to leave behind a place that has been their home for so long, but they are also excited about the prospect of retirement and exploring new opportunities.
‘There are days when we’re very positive about it, and there are other days when we’re sad for what we’ll miss,’ said Lady Ingilby. ‘But we’re looking forward to spending some time together in retirement and enjoying each other’s company without the burden of maintaining a large estate.’
A New Chapter
The castle has been divided into nine lots, which can be bought individually or as a whole.
The Grade I-listed castle features three reception rooms, 11 bedrooms, and six bath/shower rooms.
