A recent inspection at a local barbecue eatery in Chatham County revealed a disturbing discovery: live roaches infesting the premises. Meanwhile, most restaurants in Triangle counties received high sanitation scores, with some minor infractions corrected during inspections.
Sanitation Scores in Triangle Counties: Week of Dec. 17-23
The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep diners informed about the health grades at local eateries.
Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to evaluate restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards aimed at preventing food-borne illnesses. These scores are based on inspections conducted by county health departments, which assess restaurants for cleanliness, proper food handling, and other critical factors.
Wake County Sanitation Scores
In Wake County, 83 restaurant inspections were completed between Dec. 17-23. Most restaurants received an A grade (at least 90% score). Naga’s South Indian Cuisine in Morrisville received a score of 88% during an inspection on Dec. 20. The restaurant was found to be in violation of 13 standards, including storing raw chicken above ready-to-eat foods and having soiled floors, walls, and equipment. Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
Durham County Sanitation Scores
In Durham County, all 29 restaurants inspected between Dec. 17-23 received an A grade. The county’s inspection management system shows that these restaurants met or exceeded the required standards for cleanliness and food handling.
Orange County Sanitation Scores
Similarly, in Orange County, all 21 restaurants inspected between Dec. 17-23 received an A grade. These restaurants demonstrated a high level of compliance with sanitation regulations.
Johnston County Sanitation Scores
In Johnston County, most restaurants (20 out of 21) received an A grade. La Quinta Inn & Suites in Selma received a score of 81.5% during an inspection on Dec. 23. The restaurant was found to be in violation of nine standards, including improper storage and handling of food. Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
Chatham County Sanitation Scores
In Chatham County, most restaurants (9 out of 10) received an A grade. Allen & Son Bar-B-Que in Pittsboro received a score of 87.5% during an inspection on Dec. 19. The restaurant was found to be in violation of 14 standards, including the presence of live roaches and mold on non-food-contact surfaces. Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
