A bizarre incident has been reported by the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) of a solo microlight aircraft taking off from an airfield without its pilot, sparking concerns over safety and stability.
Small Aircraft Takes Off by Itself and Flies Out to Sea
The Pegasus Quantum 15-912 G-MZOW, a two-seat microlight aircraft, took off from Athey’s Moor airfield in Northumberland after its pilot decided to hand start the rear propeller. However, the engine started, and the aircraft accelerated away from the pilot, taking off by itself.
According to an accident report submitted to the UK‘s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), the incident occurred on October 3rd. The AAIB reported that the aircraft was subsequently tracked by radar as it flew over the coast north of Newcastle and out into the North Sea.
The Pegasus Quantum 15 is a lightweight recreational aircraft with a hang glider-style wing, three wheels, and an open cockpit. While its manufacturer has described it as having “peerless flying characteristics,” the incident raises questions about the stability and safety of this type of aircraft.
Investigation and Aftermath
