Empowering Young African Voices: GirlZ Off Mute
Society Africa Young African voices have their say. Deutsche Welle’s (DW) GirlZ Off Mute initiative provides a platform for 13- to 18-year-old girls and young women across Africa to cover the stories that matter to them and their peers. Equipped with a camera and mic, these young reporters bring a fresh perspective to the media landscape.
Breaking Language Barriers
GirlZ Off Mute is a video and radio format produced in multiple languages, including English, French, Kiswahili, Portuguese, Hausa, and Amharic. This bilingual approach allows the program to reach a wider audience, with DW reaching 91 million Sub-Saharan users weekly through online, social media, radio, and TV.
DW is Germany’s international broadcaster, providing unbiased news and information in 32 languages around the world. As an independent media outlet, its focus areas include freedom and human rights, democracy and the rule of law, world trade and social justice, health education, and environmental protection. DW’s TV, online, and radio services generate 320 million user contacts every week.
Behind the Scenes
GirlZ Off Mute is produced by Jane Nyingi, a Kenyan broadcast journalist with vast experience in both radio and TV. Based in Bonn, Germany, she brings her expertise to the project, ensuring that the program stays true to its mission.
