A Real-World Treasure Hunt Like No Other
Jon Collins-Black has kicked off what he believes to be the largest real-world treasure hunt in US history. This epic adventure involves five boxes hidden across five states, containing a trove worth several million dollars.
The Perfect Trove
Collins-Black’s quest for the perfect treasure began with studying creative literature as a student. He was inspired by the likes of Emerson and Thoreau, who spent countless hours in the woods. This led him to search for items that would appeal to hunters across generations and interests, including his own.
He scrolled through auction websites until he found two pages from Thoreau’s journal. Later, he acquired four items from Forrest Fenn’s treasure trove and an emerald owned by industrialist Andrew Carnegie.
Years in the Making
Collins-Black took inspiration from his own childhood experiences, where he would spend hours searching for treasure at the Emerald Hollow Mine. He decided to create his own treasure hunt, which would give people a reason to interact with nature and provide an exciting adventure.
Finding Treasure to Hide
Collins-Black spent years studying creative literature as a student, drawing inspiration from Emerson and Thoreau’s love of being in the woods. He acquired four items from Fenn’s treasure trove, including two pages from Thoreau’s journal, and an emerald owned by Andrew Carnegie.
Hiding the Treasure
Collins-Black commissioned blacksmith Seth Gould to build five unique puzzle boxes, each one as cool as the item itself. The task of hiding them was crucial in making the hunt exciting and challenging for the treasure hunters.
Launching the Quest
The quest was launched this month, and has already inspired hunters to swap theories and begin searching. Collins-Black’s book is currently the top seller in Amazon’s Adventure Travel category. However, he believes it will take between seven and 10 years for the full treasure to be found, and hasn’t ruled out sharing additional clues.
A Legacy Project
Collins-Black emphasizes that this is not a legacy project where people will still be searching for his treasures when he passes away. He wants to give people a reason to interact with nature and provide an exciting adventure, which is why he has created this treasure hunt.
